Just this single die marriage is known bearing the 1805 date. Originally, 1,781 coins were recorded by Mint officers. This issue is slightly scarcer than the 1804 14 Stars variety, with approximately 100 survivors known today. Despite this quantity, high quality examples are truly rare, with only two or three Mint State coins known. This example from the Bass Collection is among the top five or six finest survivors. The reverse die was a true “workhorse”, used in combination with four different obverse dies spanning three years, and also later used as the reverse for 1807 dimes.
