Showing heavy obverse scratches and burnishing, this variety is double struck with one strike centered, the other almost 50% off-center! Dramatic gold errors such as this are extremely rare and unusual. To add further excitement, this is a previously unknown obverse die discovered by Harry Bass. This is probably the same coin appearing in the December 1890 S.H. and H. Chapman sale of the Thomas Cleneay Collection. They described the Cleneay coin as: “Proof surface. Badly scratched and part of motto struck across eagle.”

Provenance:
Purchased from Numismatics, Ltd., October 3, 1974.

Commentary:
"Obverse: NEW obverse die! Top horizontal of 5 is very thin and pointed. Not repunched. Reverse: That of 1821A, double struck. Discovery piece."
