This variety is known as Breen 1-B and is an attractive example of a scarcer variety. Mintage of half eagles in 1800 totaled 11,622 coins. Additionally, 26,006 coins were minted in 1801. Some of these were certainly dated 1799; however, the mintage of coins bearing the 1800 date must have been a significant portion of the total. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Walter Breen identified the 1800 mintage as being the total of both figures, or 37,628 coins.
