Representing the first year of issue for the updated large letters reverse, this gem Proof example is from the collection of John Work Garrett and is possibly the finest of only four Proof examples known. The other three Proofs are held in private collections, including the Bass duplicate sold in May 2000! Forming a complete collection of Proof three-dollar gold coins from the Philadelphia Mint is a formidable task, accomplished by very few collectors. Two modern era collectors who have done so are Harry Bass and Ed Trompeter.

Provenance:
From Stack's sale of a portion of the John Work Garrett Collection, March 1976, Lot 393.

Commentary:
(adapted): "Obverse: Bust truncation quite thin. Letters appear thinner than those found on 1854 coins. Possibly a new working hub, or working dies not being as deeply hubbed as previously. This variance as to thickness of bust truncation is evident in many years following, with some being thick and others thin. Further analysis is needed. Reverse: Large DOLLARS. Date slopes down to right."
