Two varieties of this issue exist and are distinguished by having complete serifs on both I’s, or broken serifs on these letters. This variety has normal letters. This is an important rarity among Proof three-dollar gold coins, with just five or six known including an example in the Smithsonian Institution. If this coin is the same as offered in the 1963 sale of the Samuel Wolfson Collection, then just five Proofs are known. Of those known, just this example and the Ed Trompeter coin qualify as “gems.”

Provenance:
Purchased from Abe Kosoff, August 3, 1971.
