This dollar pattern was quite similar in basic concept and layout to the annular or ring-form cents minted a few years earlier. With discoveries of gold in California, it was found desirable to employ a gold dollar in the channels of commerce. Gold dollars had already been issued during the three previous years, however this annular form allowed a greater diameter, thereby alleviating concerns of many that the diameter of gold dollars was much too small. This pattern design is known in gold, silver, copper, copper-nickel alloy, and nickel. Only about six or seven silver examples are known.
