This dollar is an absolutely exceptional example of this very rare transitional pattern issue. The obverse features the normal Liberty Seated design in use for standard dollars of the period, with a reverse that was introduced to regular-issue coinage two years later, in 1866. Just five examples were listed by Andrew W. Pollock, III, in his pattern coinage reference, with the possibility of one or two other examples hidden in collections. The field of transitional silver patterns dated 1863 through 1865 is a fertile area for future research.

Provenance:
In trade from Numismatics, Ltd., August 12, 1974, no further details.
Obverse:
Regular-issue die of the date.
Reverse:
Very similar to the regular-issue die of the date, but with IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon above the eagle.
Commentary:
"Trade in from Numismatics, Ltd."
