This delightful pattern coin is from the regular dies for circulating and Proof gold double eagles of the type issued from 1866 to 1876. It is intriguing that the obverse is from a different die than the gold Proof example from the Bass Collection, sold by Bowers and Merena in May 2000. Walter Breen noted that the Date was well to the left, with the 1 touching the bust, and very close to border. Breen’s description matches this aluminum impression. The gold Proof in the May 2000 sale has top of 1 clearly separated from the bust with left base in a different relation to the border.

Provenance:
From Stack's sale of the DiBello Collection, May 1970, Lot 506.
Obverse:
Regular-issue dies of the date and denomination.
Reverse:
Regular-issue dies of the date and denomination.
Commentary:
"Regular dies. Trial piece."
