This example is struck from the normal dies used to produce Proof gold dollars in 1874 and is struck in aluminum. Just two or three examples are known, along with two or three others in copper. Andrew W. Pollock, III, recorded just three listings for this die trial in aluminum. The others include the King Farouk Collection coin, sold at auction in 1954 and not further identified, along with an example handled by Abner Kreisberg in the early 1960s and also not further identified. It is possible that these represent three different examples, or they may all be the same.
