This silver dollar version of George Morgan’s beautiful Shield Earring design displays the engraver’s intent in its full beauty. This Bass Collection coin is one of the finest among just six or seven known silver examples of this pattern issue. Five or six others are known in copper. Harry Bass acquired this example and the half dollar of this design from the Gaston DiBello Collection.

Obverse:
Head of Liberty to right with flowing hair wearing headband inscribed LIBERTY and wearing an earring shaped like the United States shield, E PLURIBUS UNUM above with stops dividing words, 13 stars around and date below.
Reverse:
Defiant eagle ready for flight to right grasping olive branch and arrows.
