This is Bela Lyon Pratt’s larger half eagle variety of his ingenious sunken relief design. Many objected to the new sunken relief design, including prominent coin dealer S. Hudson Chapman, who wrote to President Roosevelt with a list of his objections. Matte and satin Proofs were minted in very limited quantities due to their unpopularity. In 1909, the Mint experimented with different finishes, and this satin finish Proof was produced, sometimes known as Roman Finish.
