President Theodore Roosevelt desired new designs for our gold coinage and called upon sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. These issues with periods between words of the legend on the reverse are experimental issues, prior to large scale production of the 1907-1908 No Motto coinage. This issue has a thin, raised knife-rim on the outer edge, caused by the pressure required to produce complete detail, forcing metal between the collar and circumference of the die.

Provenance:
Acquired in 2000 by David Calhoun of the Harry W. Bass, Jr. Foundation.
Obverse:
Indian Head by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
Reverse:
Reverse with standing eagle, by Saint-Gaudens. Periods at sides of reverse inscriptions. Special issue.
