Advanced die cracks may be seen on both obverse and reverse dies. Some of these cracks are quite heavy. Other types of damage to steel dies include clash marks, when obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between, leaving impressions from one die on the other. Coins later minted will show incuse details from the opposite dies. Occasionally, one die might be replaced with another, and coins struck from the new pair may show clash mark details from the previous die.
