This is an important example from a late die state with heavy rim break over LI of LIBERTY. This represents one of the very last coins minted from this obverse die, a situation described by numismatists as “terminal die state.” Note the weakness on the reverse border at 6:30, exactly opposite the rim break. This single example is the only coin known with this heavy rim break. Students of early gold coinage are continuing the search for a second example. For many years this coin served as the plate coin in Wayte Raymond’s Standard Catalogue of United States Coins.
