1877 is a rare date with a very low circulation strike mintage of 1,468 coins in addition to just 20 Proofs. These Proof examples were struck in two distinct batches, with 10 minted on February 24 and the other 10 on May 31. Examples exist with or without rust marks on Liberty’s neck, these rust marks appearing as small raised lumps of metal. This example exhibits several of these small rust marks, which indicates it is probably one of the latest examples coined, almost certainly part of the group minted late in May.
