From a Proof mintage of 106 coins, this issue represents the first three-dollar gold coin with Proof strikes exceeding 100 pieces. Another 1,000 circulation strikes were produced. Proofs were struck throughout the year, including 30 coins in January, 42 in late February, 13 in late June, and a final group of 21 in late December. Probably about 40 Proof examples survive. Determination of an exact census of survivors among all these Proof coins, and of nearly all other denominations, is virtually impossible. Our best hope is an estimate based on the experiences of many numismatic students.
