This low mintage issue is comprised of 1,000 circulation strikes and 142 Proofs. Of this total, possibly 70 to 80 Proofs remain extant today, mostly impaired or otherwise of low quality. This “gem” example is one of the finest known. Walter Breen described two different reverse dies for this issue, distinguished by the date position. The differences are so minute that it is almost impossible to distinguish between the two varieties, unless examples of each are examined together.
