This obverse die was resurrected from 1857 pattern coinage and muled with a quarter eagle reverse bearing the date 1860! The obverse die appears to be identical to 1857 pattern cents and quarter eagles, the latter with a high date. Curiously, early pattern researchers Edgar Adams and William H. Woodin, who collaborated on a ground-breaking reference covering these issues, listed this pattern issue twice, once for 1857 and again for 1860. This reverse is not known on any other patterns although the wreath is virtually identical to that on the 1942 experimental cents.

Provenance:
Purchased from Abe Kosoff, August 3, 1971.
Obverse:
Head of Liberty to left, similar to that used for nickel three-cent pieces of 1865-1889, LIBERTY on coronet, 13 stars around, 1857 below.
Reverse:
Wreath with 2 1/2 DOLLARS 1860 on three lines within wreath with prominent raised veins in the leaves.
Commentary:
"Quarter eagle. Obv: 1857, Rev: 1860. Mule of obverses."
