This delightful pattern issue combines the postage currency reverse, dated 1863, with an undated Liberty Seated obverse. Andrew Pollock noted that this pattern was struck in nickel, or a combination of nickel and silver. He listed only two examples of this very rare pattern. Another was included in the Louis Eliasberg, Sr. Collection. Other pattern issues featuring this same obverse design, without the date, are known with 1868-dated reverse dies. Further study of die states may determine the order in which all of these various patterns were struck.
