This head style has the first curl, at upper left, much smaller than previous styles. Liberty’s head is smaller than before. This was the final modification prepared by William Kneass, with Christian Gobrecht taking responsibility the next year. This example is an extremely rare Proof, one of just four known for the date. One of these is part of the National Numismatic Collection housed in the Smithsonian Institution. Harry Bass acquired this coin from the Eliasberg Collection, the only complete collection of United States coinage ever formed.

Provenance:
From the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries sale of the Eliasberg Collection, October 1982, Lot 102. Earlier from Henry Chapman's sale of the George H. Earle Collection, June 1912, there offered as Lot 2525.
Obverse:
As preceding, but with another slightly modified portrait style.
Reverse:
As preceding.
Commentary:
"Reverse: That of 1834C (2D?), broken (A)M."
