Each coin that is struck from a given die pair causes a very slight change to the steel dies. Although the effects of striking one coin will not cause much change to the die, the effects of striking a large number of coins, one after another, can be quite noticeable. Dies would sometimes develop flow lines, radial lines on the steel surface that would be transferred to finished coins. Such lines would indicate a die that had been used past its normally serviceable period.
