The No Motto design type was produced from 1838 to 1866 with the second obverse, first introduced in 1839, featuring a modified Liberty Head combined with a refined reverse exhibiting smaller letters. Only five or six Proof examples are known, and this is one of the finest. This issue is highly unusual for No Motto gold coinage in that the surviving Proof population is greater than for Mint-State coins.

Provenance:
From Superior's sale of the Miguel Munoz Collection, June 1978, Lot 1961. Earlier from the Virgil Brand Collection; Kreisberg and Schulman's sale of March 1965, there as Lot 157.
Obverse:
Modification of foregoing, with the head of Miss Liberty differently positioned.
Reverse:
As preceding.
