Just 6,600 coins of this denomination were struck during the second year of operations at the San Francisco Mint. Virtually the entire mintage went immediately into circulation. The majority of survivors grade Very Fine to Extremely Fine, with only two or three Mint State examples known, including this coin which is almost certainly the finest surviving circulation strike. In addition, a single Proof example is known, undoubtedly issued as a special presentation piece.

Provenance:
Purchased from Fred Sweeney, September 18, 1972.

Commentary:
(adapted): "Obverse: Bust truncation moderately thin, perhaps a bit shorter than Philadelphia coinage of 1855. Reverse: Large S mintmark, a bit smaller than that used in DOLLARS. Date level. Lightly clashed."
