This is the third year of use for this obverse die, with 30 Proofs coined. Prior to 1879, Proof mintages were generally quite low, with 20 or 25 pieces typical for many issues. Beginning with this issue and continuing to the end of the series in 1889, mintages of Proof coins increased dramatically, clearly indicating increased interest in coin collecting. Early impressions included 20 coins minted January 25, while late die states consisted of 10 coins minted November 22.
