This piece is the 1838-dated version of the popular Gobrecht dollar. This obverse design was modified through addition of 13 stars, representing the original 13 states. As with all Gobrecht dollars, both Originals and Restrikes were produced. The Originals were coined in 1838 while the Restrikes in 1859 or later. One example is known struck over an 1859 Liberty Seated dollar! The artist’s signature was removed from the obverse for this issue. Gobrecht dollars are from two distinctly different reverse dies featuring the eagle in a plain field or amidst a constellation of 26 varying size stars.

Liberty seated on rock, holding shield and liberty pole with cap, LIBERTY on shield, 13 stars around, date below Liberty.
Reverse:
Eagle flies left in plain field, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA ONE DOLLAR around.
