This design features a Liberty Cap surrounded by a glory of rays on the obverse, with the date below. The reverse has a palm frond encircling the denomination with the statutory legend around – an attractive design that artist Franklin Peale borrowed from Christian Gobrecht’s 1836 gold dollar pattern, number 6006 in the present display. James Barton Longacre prepared designs for this denomination in 1850. The dies for this pattern issue were prepared by Franklin Peale and were ready early in 1851. Obviously, the Longacre designs were preferred, since they were chosen for the final issue prepared for circulation.

Provenance:
Purchased from Lee F. Hewitt, April 17, 1972.
Obverse:
A liberty or Phrygian cap surrounded by a glory or sunburst, LIBERTY on band around cap, date below cap.
Reverse:
A coiled palm frond encircles Roman numeral III, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the circumference.
