This pattern features a combination of Anthony Paquet’s Seated Liberty obverse with the James B. Longacre reverse used for regular-issue double eagles of this period. In 1859 a series of double eagle patterns was produced featuring six different obverse and reverse design combinations by Paquet and Longacre. Among the various patterns in this series, Paquet prepared this obverse with all others by Longacre’s hand. Similarly, Longacre prepared this reverse die with all others by Paquet. As with many of the Bass Collection patterns, this example served as the plate coin for United States Patterns and Related Issues by Andrew W. Pollock, III.
