This pattern was the creation of Eastman Johnson, an American painter. Johnson was born in Lowell, Maine in 1824 and lived 82 years. The central perforation is octagonally shaped and is surrounded on the reverse by 13 stars. The purpose of his design is not known to us today. Listed by Andrew Pollock as Rarity-6, possible 15 to 20 examples survive.

Obverse:
Annular design with octagonal central hole surrounded by 13 stars with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above and date below.
Reverse:
FIVE above hole and CENTS below with shield to right and left.
