Here is a further modification of the obverse design featuring a larger bust of Liberty. The reverse design remained as before with an Open Wreath enclosing the date and denomination. This obverse and reverse combination only appeared on the coinage of 1849. Gold dollars were struck in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Charlotte, and Dahlonega in this year. The Open Wreath design was common to the coinage of all Mints.

Provenance:
Purchased from Don Quiggins, November 4, 1972.
Obverse:
Large head of Liberty faces left, her hair tied in a bun and held by a coronet inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters. Around, 13 stars. Bust truncation contains the designer's initial L (this being standard from this point forward in time).
Reverse:
Two olive branches cross below, tied by a ribbon, forming an open wreath. Within, 1 DOLLAR and the date. Around, the statutory legend, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Mintmark for branch mint coins is below ribbon knot.
Commentary:
"5/G(b). Type III. Large Head, Open Wreath."
