This is the half dollar version of the famous Shield Earring design, one of only eight or nine examples known today. An additional six examples are known in copper. Earlier numismatists sometimes called this the Schoolgirl design, noting its similarity to the 1879 patterns of that name. The cataloguer for New Netherlands Coin Company noted that Dr. Judd preferred the Shield Earring nomenclature to avoid confusion.
