Utilizing the obverse design from large cents struck 1843 to 1857, this large copper or bronze coin now bears the three-cent denomination. Proposed bronze one-cent coins had a weight standard of 48 grains. These three-cent coins, therefore, would have a standard of 144 grains. Although light and heavy examples are known, the majority of survivors from these dies have weights in the range 136 to 144 grains. The reverse of this pattern issue has a design very similar to the two-cent coins introduced in 1864, although the wreath is somewhat modified, with laurel rather than wheat.

Provenance:
Purchased from Lee F. Hewitt, April 17, 1972.
Obverse:
Coiled hair bust of Liberty to left, stars around, Braided Hair and other names have been applied. Date below neck truncation. The motif is related to the circulating large copper cent style of 1843-1857.
Reverse:
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery, small wreath at center, 3 CENTS on two lines within wreath.
Commentary:
"Was listed as Patt 372."
