This issue has a very low overall production, with just 1,000 circulation strikes and 36 Proofs minted. These Proofs were coined in two different groups, with 20 struck in February and the other 16 in September. This example is from the same obverse die used earlier for Proofs of 1877 through 1879. Possibly 20 examples survive today.

(adapted): "Obverse: That of 1877 #1 Proof. Rust lump on neck opposite next to lowest curl; another (larger), in center area of lower hair. Reverse: Date canted very slightly up to right, a bit low, first 8 very slightly right of being centered under first L. Beveled Proof edge."
