James B. Longacre’s Liberty Head obverse is here muled with a reverse by Anthony C. Paquet. This obverse is the third minor modification of the Liberty Head design introduced by Longacre in 1850. The obverse does not bear the date; however, the reverse includes the date as part of its design. Harry Bass noted this obverse was used as a master die. Regarding this obverse design, Andrew Pollock noted: “The truncation of Miss Liberty’s bust appears to be chamfered, and the initials JBL on the truncation are farther to the left than on the double eagle obverses used in earlier years.”

Provenance:
From Abe Kosoff, August 19, 1972, via Michael G. Brownlee.
Obverse:
The standard Liberty Head motif of the year, but without date, seemingly a working die in the form before a date logotype was added.
Reverse:
Very heavy wreath attributed to Paquet.
Commentary:
"Includes MGB 10%. Belongs in Kosoff V-2715! No date on coin. Third Longacre obverse. Used as master die for regular issue dies. V-2715-#1."
