This specimen is a delightful example of William Barber’s design, mated with the standard reverse for circulating quarter dollars. The obverse has considerable areas of missing details resulting from a light impression from the hub, or possibly die lapping. This is especially noticeable at the Liberty cap on top of the pole in the field. These characteristics are common to all quarter dollar patterns of this obverse design. This particular example is one of about ten known of this variety, with others from these dies exhibiting a plain rather than a reeded edge. Copper and aluminum examples are also known.

Provenance:
Purchased from Abe Kosoff, August 3, 1971.
Obverse:
Seated Liberty to left, upright Liberty pole with cap behind, shield in right hand, olive branch in left hand, LIBERTY on ribbon across shield, 13 stars around, date below.
Reverse:
From the die used to coin regular-issue quarter dollars of the date.
