Dana Bickford was traveling in Europe, and as he visited different countries he was required to exchange his money to the appropriate currency system. Often times, he was ignorant of the exchange rate and eventually became quite annoyed. In response, he developed a plan of international coinage, with one side of his coin design displaying the value of the coin in each of five different European countries, along with the United States. The plan suggested that each country could issue the coins with the monetary side remaining the same and the opposite side including a design developed by that country.
