This is the close overdate variety among 1808/7 half eagles and is much more plentiful than the other variety with the wide overdate. Only the bottom of the crossbar from the previous 7 is visible within the top loop of the final 8. The reverse die of both overdate varieties is the same. The obverse die on this example shows considerable evidence of lapping, with the lower hair details below the bust definitely weakened.

Provenance:
Purchased from John N. Rowe, III, October 7, 1966.

Commentary:
"Obverse: 8 over 7. Numerals widely spaced. 1 is centered over two denticles. Date arced, very close to long denticles. Top of 1 higher than that of 8. At top left of final 8, top left of a 7 is faintly visible. Bottom of crossbar of 7 visible within top loop of 8. No foot of 7 visible beneath bottom loop of 8. Large round die center punch lump within a depressed circle on jaw in front of hair curl. Die has been lapped, resulting in bottommost curl being weak and broken at right side. The interior is hollow. Reverse: That of 1807Y. 5D close. D apart from wing. U near leaf. 5 near leaf. Clashed within shield and lapped."
