Three-dollar gold coins were first proposed in 1832; however, it was not until the Mint Act of February 21, 1853, that this denomination was actually authorized. James Barton Longacre designed these coins with an Indian Head device to represent Liberty. Total mintage was 138,618 coins, a strong beginning for this ill-fated denomination. At least 15 Proofs were struck, with the total probably closer to 25. This outstanding gem Proof example is one of only eight or nine known and may be the finest existing survivor.
