Here is a lovely example of this aluminum pattern, with bright gray surfaces and outstanding cameo-like contrast. This is one of just under a dozen known. Two different obverse dies were produced for this pattern issue, with the differences in date position first noted by Harry Bass. This variety has the date low in the field, with all digits much closer to the border, and is now called the Low Date variety. The other obverse die, displayed at HBCC-6075, has the date much higher in the field. This obverse is generally attributed to James Longacre with the reverse probably by Anthony Paquet.

Provenance:
Purchased from Lee F. Hewitt, April 17, 1972.
Obverse:
Head of Liberty to left, similar in appearance to the style on the nickel three-cent pieces of the era, 13 stars around, date below.
Reverse:
Eagle with wings spread upward, arrows and olive branch in talons, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, TEN D. below, IN GOD WE TRUST on ribbon above.
Commentary:
"Was listed as Patt 448."
