This is a lovely example of George Morgan’s Schoolgirl pattern, featuring Liberty with her hair combed back and tied behind her head with a small ribbon. A headband is inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse is labeled the Defiant Eagle for the threatening pose with its wings spread upwards and back. The Schoolgirl name was apparently conceived by Harlan P. Smith or David Proskey in the early 1890s. These gentlemen were the proprietors of New York Coin and Stamp Company and used this term in their April 1891 auction catalogue offering the F.W. Doughty Collection.

Provenance:
From Stack's sale of the Gaston DiBello collection, May 1970, Lot 433.
Obverse:
Head of Liberty to left, headband in hair, ribbon lower in hair, necklace around neck, LIBERTY on headband, E PLURIBUS before bust, UNUM behind, date below, two stars at point of bust, seven stars above head and four more below truncation of hair.
Reverse:
Defiant eagle standing to right with wings half spread atop cartouche, olive branches to right of cartouche and arrows to left, IN GOD WE TRUST inscribed on cartouche, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA atop eagle, ONE DOLLAR below.
