The obverse of this pattern is similar to the approved and adopted design, although the central motif is set lower in the field, dividing the date and providing an un-centered appearance. A laurel wreath on the reverse encloses the numeral 5, representing the denomination although CENTS is not to be found. This example is one of just two thin planchet specimens enumerated by Andrew W. Pollock, III. At 54.7 grains, this is almost 30% below the final standard adopted for coinage.

Provenance:
New Netherlands 41st Sale, June 1953, Lot 505; Stack's ANA Sale of August 1971, Lot 343.
Obverse:
Similar to adopted design except for the date configuration. IN GOD WE TRUST above shield, date below, 18 and 66 of date divided by ball of shield (whereas on regular issues the four date numerals are contiguous).
Reverse:
Somewhat delicate laurel wreath, tied at bottom, fancy 5 at center of wreath.
