The legendary rarity among collectible three-dollar gold coins, struck only in Proof, with both Originals and Restrikes recorded. Just 20 Originals were minted on February 20 with about half that number surviving today. These Originals, such as this coin from the Harry Bass Collection, are from the same obverse used in 1873 and 1874, with a die scratch from F to the border, and now also with the bottom of the first S in STATES filled. In addition, approximately 12 to 15 Restrikes are known from a different obverse die.
