Here is the final 1797 Heraldic Eagle variety, with a die crack from the border through star 8 (third from top on left) into the field. This is the latest die state of this obverse die known. Through study of the emission sequence, we can be certain that this issue was minted after both 1798-dated varieties. This specimen from the Bass Collection ranks as one of the finest survivors from this die pair, being an attractive Mint-State example. An estimated dozen such survivors are known from the total population of about 150 coins.
