This coin is simply the regular issue quarter eagle of this date struck on a silver planchet. Others are known struck in copper. Two different obverse dies are known for this pattern issue, with the date centered or low. This is the low date variety with the final digit 1 closer to the dentils. Careful examination reveals that the difference is more positional, with this low date variety farther left in relation to the bust of Liberty, and having the first digit 1 much closer to the bust. Harry Bass was the first to distinguish between these differing obverse dies.
