This coin is an outstanding gem Proof, one of the finest known from a mintage of 25 Proofs struck February 20. Walter Breen estimated 15 to 17 survivors; however, the actual population is probably around a dozen pieces. This obverse die has tiny rust pits in D and R, and was first introduced to Proof coinage in 1867. In addition to these Proof examples struck in gold, additional examples from this same die pair were minted in aluminum.
