This pattern is an outstanding choice Proof example of the 1839 version of Christian Gobrecht’s silver dollar. Although the reverse was changed for use on standard silver dollars first issued in 1840, this obverse was virtually untouched for the coinage beginning the next year. Several varieties exist for this coinage issue, including those with plain edge or reeded edge, in various die alignments, and with or without stars on the reverse. This specimen is the actual plate coin for United States Patterns and Related Issues by Andrew W. Pollock, III. Many of the Bass Collection coins were used by Pollock in his reference.

Glendining's sale of October 15, 1970, Lot 796.
