This is technically the same die variety as 1805, HBCC-3012. The 1805-dated obverse die was softened and punched with a digit 6, to create an 1806-dated die. In most cases the old die was continued in service into later years as long as it was still usable. For some unknown reason, it was thought desirable to change the date in 1806 when the new year arrived. Quarter dollars and half dollars are also known with similar overdates, utilizing obverse dies that had seen service the previous year. This is a rarity in the early quarter eagle series with only about 20 examples known.
