Liberty is modified with more delicate features. Half eagles of 1840, from the various mints, are known with differing diameters, generally called Broad Mill (as displayed here) and Narrow Mill. While standard diameter for Broad Mill coins was 22.5 millimeters, compared to 21.6 for the Narrow Mill, in practice these diameters varied considerably. Mint-State examples of the Broad Mill coinage are quite rare, with fully prooflike examples extremely rare.
