Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by President Theodore Roosevelt to create new gold coinage designs. He completed both the eagle and double eagle designs before his death. His double eagle design, which today popularly carries the artist’s name, is considered the single most beautiful coin design in American coinage history. This exciting example, from the Eliasberg Collection, is the Extremely High Relief variety, which truly shows the artist’s intentions. Approximately 15 examples exist, of which six are in museums, three of these in the Smithsonian Institution.

Provenance:
From the Bowers and Ruddy Galleries sale of the Eliasberg Collection, October 1982, Lot 1021. Earlier from Thomas L. Elder's November 1920 sale of the R.V. Mathieu and E.B. Townsend Collections Lot 1755b.
Obverse:
Saint-Gaudens pattern $20 with Ultra High Relief characteristics. Liberty striding forward; a motif taken from the sculptor's Sherman Victory statue. 46 stars around obverse border.
Reverse:
Flying eagle with sun's rays in the background. Inscription above.
