The reverse now carries the motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, in an arc just above the sun at bottom. The obverse includes a border of 46 stars representing the states then part of the union. This variety has a sharply doubled mintmark, and is quite rare. The example shown represents one of the finest known.

Provenance:
From Lester Merkin's sale of March 1967, Lot 489.
Obverse:
As preceding, with a border of 46 stars, for the states of the Union (at that time).
Reverse:
Saint-Gaudens design, in shallow relief, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST just above the sun.
Commentary:
"D m/m repunched left."
