The reverse die of this example has a long radial die crack from the border at 2:00 to the eagle’s wing tip, continuing through the wing and across the shield. Once coinage dies became worn or developed defects, they would sometimes be refinished by lapping, a type of polishing to remove defects. Clash marks and other defects, even including very minor die cracks, could be removed during this process. This same refinishing process would also remove very minor elements of the design. Stars would appear smaller and very shallow parts of hair details and other fine details would disappear.
